Assistive technology

Provide a definition of Assistive technology (your Cook and Hussey reading may be helpful with this).
“Any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use an assistive technology device”.
“The science or study of the practical or industrial arts, applied science, a method, process, etc. For handling a specific technical problem”.

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions.

Communication device =1000-$5000 New Zealand Dollars.
The self contained tech/talk augmentative communicator has 6,8 or 12 levels which a client and therapist use to record and playback distinct messages. Up to 48 to 96 messages can be stored and vary from “Will you do something” to “ I am worried”.
It is easy to operate by pressing the 8 squares available on the dash board.

How does your chosen piece of equipment increased functional capacity for the user? Provide examples here from the tutorial and lecture.
This assistive talking machine would be excellent for a person that can’t express how they may be felling or show what they want to do.
It would assist a person with limited physical function, although would need some some hand functions to be able to push the buttons. Some cognition to know what you want.
This assistive device doesn’t need others to help it function it can be functioned solely by the user.

Task One: Explain the step by step process required to embed You Tube videos into your Blog . Consider using screen captures to provide a visual representation of these steps.

The easiest way to embed a YouTube video into a blog post (or page) is to copy the video’s embed code and paste it into your blog post.
YouTube embed codes can be found next to any video on YouTube.com:

After you paste the code into your post and save the post, the video will be embedded for you. When you save your post, the embed code will also be automatically translated into a shorter, WordPress specific code that will look something like this:

You can move this code around your post to determine where the video should be shown.
You can embed multiple videos in a post.

Another way to embed a YouTube video is to copy the URL of a video, go to to the Add Media section of your write page (the page where you compose your blog posts), click on Add Video, paste the URL into the box, and click the Insert into Post button:

Tutorial one

Provide a definition of Information Technology/Information Communications Technology.
Information Technology or (IT) as otherwise known is the "study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware"
Retrieved from (http://www.wikipedia.org.wiki/Information_technology)%2005/05/08

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?

Within our society today we have become reliant on IT. Because of increasing new development of technology our society finds it easier to communicate and share information. For example text messaging and email webcams and skype are all devices that lead to the information being shared to many individuals receiving the a message from person to person.
The improving communication and information technology is prevalent in our society. I feel that it has a positive effect on our society .We can now be contacted anytime and anywhere through the use of cell phones and emails. Instead of pigeon post, or to go back even further in time the Morse code.
IT has defiantly developed for the best it is so commonly used by all ages. Although my mother still doesn’t know how to email. The IT world of Internet exploring, booking online, emailing, texting, skype phone calls and list goes on everyone is getting more and more familiar with it and making life a little bit easier.

What IT devices or systems do you feel comfortable and competent using?
I feel most comfortable using my cell phone to txt people. Although I find emailing very easy too, cell phones are much easier to access and use, there are turn on and log off buttons all the time and no log in details required. Cell phones are by your side in your pocket all the time.

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences consider how IT is being used in Occupational Therapy practice?
The staff intranet was used for all staff to communicate for example meeting, party's, items for sale. Tele conferencing was used with medical staff throughout the country and overseas.
IT was also used as a means of safety, cell phones were taken out by each staff member who went on Home Visits and if they had not returned before there estimated time they were phoned to ensure they were ok.
More advanced IT that was used on my placement setting was a driving assessment. It would teach a client how to drive. This was used to assess their ability safely before putting them on the open road.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices?
Confidentiality is a huge ethnical issue causing ethical problems because every on and everyone can access information about anyone by simply just typing in a person name into a Google search.
Text message bullying has also raised many concerns between young individuals. Social networking sites such as face book, blogs and bebo are increasing individuals vulnerability and making it far more easier for people to be tracked down and abuseonline.

Provide a definition of Computer Ethics.
Computer ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct.

Provide a definiton of Intellectual Property.
In law, intellectual property (IP) is an umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attach to certain types of information, ideas, or other intangibles in their expressed form. The holder of this legal entitlement is generally entitled to exercise various exclusive rights in relation to the subject matter of the IP. The term intellectual property reflects the idea that this subject matter is the product of the mind or the intellect, and that IP rights may be protected at law in the same way as any other form of property. However, the use of the term and the concepts it is said to embody are the subject of some controversy
Retrieved February 14, 2007, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_property

Provide a definiton of Social Justice.
Social justice mostly refers to an ideal of society, where "justice" refers to economic status rather than to the administration of laws. It is based on the idea of a society which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society, although what is "fair treatment" and a "just share" must remain unclear or subject to interpretation.
Retreived Februry 14, 2007, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_justice

Provide a definiton of Informed Consent.
Informed consent is a legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon an appreciation and understanding of the facts and implications of an action.
Retrieved February 14, 2007, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informed_consent

In your own words briefly summarise why or why not a greater understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our pratice and daily lives?
I know realise the importance of confidentiality and how easy it is with the use of ITC for individuals to obtain information wither it be for good or bad means.Being aware of the implications of information technology/communications has shown me not to put ourselves in vunerable situations.I need to be careful what i say and what things go on line to reduce harm to ourselves or another individual.

Tutorial Six

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating
“The Lowdown” website is a community organisation that offers a person suffering from depression to talk and share there feelings and thoughts etc.

What is the brief or focus of this community

“The Low down” is a website that offers someone experiencing depression information on depression, and advice on dealing with it. You can hear from musicians, celebs and everyday people sharing their own personal experiences with depression

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?
Thelowdown website offers information about depression and a place that a person can go and discuss with other the effect depression has on them and there stories. The website has interactive screen that people can post there thoughts and feelings, without any stigma attached.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

Thelowdown website offers a place were a person can inquire about depression and learn about what it is. The website gives a person an opportunity to “self test”. It also offers a posting discussion board were they can ask questions from other people that suffer from depression and help services people can go to. The website is
monitored by qualified counsellors.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed (you may have to provide a context to your excerpt).
My name is Jordyn Fisher, im 15 yrs old and I wish to share with you a piece of writing i created to give hope to those that suffer from depression. My poem is entitled "Merely A State Of Mind".
Hopefully this helps to make a difference or give some form of hope. Depression hits close to home as one of my friends has depression. Thanks for your time and I hope this helps :)

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.
“Thelowdown” website can be accessed worldwide but is completely confidential.
It is accessible 24/7 and is monitored by qualified counsellors.
The website is encouraged by New Zealand celebrities who have posted videos that express there struggles from depression but is used on the website to show that anyone can suffer from depression and how can be overcame by all types of people.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity
This defiantly is a step up from the more traditional ways of helping people who suffer or have questions about depression. I feel that this website is a great way for people that suffer or are inquiring about depression to be a part of a community and fell comfortable about asking question and share there experiences.
Instead of just going to a counselor a person can ask questions and share there feelings over line.
There thoughts and feelings can teach other people that access the website and they too can comment and give a helpful insight on what is being discussed over the posting section.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.
This community is consistently monitored by qualified cancellers in “Thelowdown” Chat room, But it doesn’t provide any comments from the counsellors. This non human contact approached lacks in a real personal sharing and information learning approach and doesn’t focus or treat the client personally. Although you can text and email “Thelowdown” team it is very different to the more traditional way of dealing or asking about depression.

Tutorial two

Digital Camera use and applications
"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras.
I would easily use a digital camera once a week, living in a flat with 5 other girls I admit that we love to have fun and make a fool of oneself and having a picture fro memories sake is something that is very important to me.
I have always been one that loves to take pictures and have an eye for the natural things around us. I have worked with manual “old school” cameras with film, I have processed many films myself. But as I grow I have came to learn many of the advantages of the “nearer generated” digital cameras.
Film cameras verses digital cameras are never used in today’s society. I have not in two years seen anyone use a film camera and that just proves my point that digital is so much better.
Digital cameras enable you to see the picture as soon as it is processed. You are able to, crop, edit light, clear red eyes, and add other objects to the photo. Most digital cameras offer a range of aspects. Digital cameras and it improving technology changes the way we can see things opening up a new world of art science and our all round human interaction with the world.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communication technology?
Digital images can be stored on SD or XD memory cards, CD, DVD, computer, memory stick, cellphones, or palm pilots. Digital images can transferred through email, social networking sites such as blogs, msn or facebook. Photos can be manipulated using programmes such as photo shop or CGI to enhance or change the photo i.e. clear red eyes, darken or lighten the photo, change the photo from colour to black and white or add objects or people to the photo, the list goes on. The overall technology is amazing in respect and is very easy to do.

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use?
Privacy and respect for people’s culture and beliefs has to be the main concern in today's society. Issues could be raised as to whether taking photos could invade ones privacy and put them in a vulnerable position of being in a photo that we never got consent for. Although this is something very easily done i.e. surveillance cameras we all need to be aware of peoples privacy, culture and beliefs.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in occupational therapy practice?
Digital cameras are being used to take photos of a clients environment to get them funding for a housing modification or for a non common list equipment application. Photos are great in the sense as it shows the “whole picture” . The photo shows a clear and exact image of an aspect that you are for example trying to get funding from enable. Clients can b photo graphed or video conducting an activity to mark/compare their progress from the initial stage to the end.
Digital images offer a great visual learning method especially in children and can be used to enhance their learning or match their learning abilities.

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by flickr.com
Flickr.com provides a service for you to manipulate your digital images. This ranges from cropping, rotating or enhancing your photos to CGI or photo shopping it to obtain the image you want.

Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to flickr.com?
Photo shop, snapfish.

Explain what the difference is between a digital and optical zoom.
Most digital cameras provide two methods for zooming: optical and digital. Unlike optical zoom, which uses the optics of the lens to magnify the size of an image, digital zoom discards pixels around the edge of an image, fitting the remaining pixels into the same space to give the appearance of zoom. Since digital zoom comes at the expense of resolution, you should always choose a camera based on its optical zoom, not the digital or combined figure. Retrieved 15/05/08
www.digitalcamera-hq.com/digital-cameras/glossary-info_guide.html

Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel?
A measure of resolution that reflects the ability of a digital camera to record detail. The more megapixels a camera has the more detail its images can contain and the more they can be enlarged without losing clarity. Retrieved 15/05/08
